We will soon be answering your question of ‘how to be a better writer’
Writing isn’t an easy task. But nothing worth having in life comes easy. The same goes for good writing skills. Gear up and get ready to improve your writing skills through the following ways :
‘Can I be blunt on this subject? If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time (or tools) to write’ , says Stephen King. And boy is he right.
Read your favorite authors, read the classics. You will get to learn so many new styles of writing that you weren’t aware of before. Once you start reading, you will start recognizing the styles of writing that you prefer and will soon be able to figure out your own style of writing. Once you start reading a lot, be sure that you will be on your way to be a better writer.
Seems pretty obvious. But people often tend to give up on writing after a short while, thinking they simply do not have what it takes to be a good writer. One thing that you need to remember is that practice makes perfect. You need to keep writing in order to get there. Make it a habit to write at least on page daily. You can write about anything that you’d like to – politics, world affairs, fashion or lifestyle. Just write. Over time you will begin to notice a clarity in the expression of your writing.
While you read, note down the words, phrases or sentences that you like the best. You will eventually get a list of your favorite words and phrases that you could use in your own writings to add weight-age to them.
Carry a small handy notebook with you at all times. More often than not we get the best of ideas in the most inconvenient of places, be it during a class lecture, a corporate meeting or a family discussion. ‘Oh I’ll write it down later when I have more time’ is what we often say to ourselves when we get these flashes of brilliance. And 99.9% of the time, we end up forgetting what it was. Carrying a small handy notebook with you will enable you to jot down those ideas as soon as they come and keep them safe for later.
I know all of us initially feel shy in showing our writings to others, even if it’s our family or friends. However, what we must never forget is that honest feedback can help point out our flaws and make us better writers. One thing to remember is to get feedback from someone who you know will be able to tell you the truth, even criticize your work (in a positive way). Once you pin point the area(s) where you go wrong, correcting your mistakes will become an easy process.
Act on these simple tips consistently and your writing skills will greatly improve. We wish you all the very best !
